Professor of Modern British History; Director of Studies in History and Politics, Pembroke College, University of Cambridge

My research involves the history of British politics and political ideas in the nineteenth century. As far as domestic politics are concerned, my main interests include the history of parliamentary politics and of Liberalism and Conservatism, together with debates about the constitution, parliament, the monarchy, English national identity and the relationship between religion and politics.

I have also written extensively on British politics and Europe in the nineteenth century, and have just finished a book on Britain and the Ottoman Middle East, 1798-1854, to be published by Princeton University Press in early 2022. I have recently published articles on the British, Baghdad and steam power, 1820-60, and on Disraeli and the East.
