Joseph Amankwah-Amoah

Professor of International Business, Durham University

Joseph Amankwah-Amoah is a professor of international business at Durham University Business School, UK. Prior to joining Durham University, he held positions at the universities of Bristol and Kent, UK. He also served as professor of international business as well as the associate dean for research and innovation for Kent Business School. His research engages with the sub-discipline of international business and strategy, focusing specifically on business failure in emerging economies. He also serves as an international expert member on the UN Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (UN-OSAA)’s knowledge network.

Joseph was included in Stanford University's prestigious list of the World Top 2% scientists for citation impact for the single year 2023, marking four consecutive years of inclusion (2023, 2022, 2021, 2020). He is also a recipient of multiple research awards across the social science disciplines and has consistently published in many journals of international repute, including the Journal of International Business Studies, British Journal of Management (4+), Journal of World Business, Industrial and Corporate Change, Business History (2+), Journal of Product Innovation Management, Social Science and Medicine, International Business Review (7+), Technological Forecasting and Social Change (17+), International Journal of Human Resource Management (2), Journal of International Management (3+), R&D Management, Business Strategy and the Environment (7+), Technovation, Computers in Industry, Group and Organization Management (2), International Journal of Production Economics, MIT Sloan Management Review, and Journal of Business Research (12+). In all, he has published over 160 articles, many in world-leading academic journals (i.e., over 90 papers appearing in just ABS 3*/4* and ABDC A/A*). He has also published over 80 papers in academic conference proceedings. He has more than 7,000 citations on Google Scholar.

His standing in the community is further reflected in guest editorships of over 10 special issues for journals such as International Marketing Review (2 issues, 2014–2016), International Business Review (2018-2019), Industrial Marketing Management (2021-2023), Technological Forecasting and Social Change (Led 2 issues, 2016-2017, 2019-2020), and Journal of Business Research (3 issues, 2016-2019, 2021-22).

He has a proven track record as a recipient of multiple research awards across the social science disciplines, including the 2021 Academy of International Business’ AIB Insight Outstanding Article Award - Celebrating 20 Years, European Academy of Management and European Management Review Best Paper for 2018, Emerald “Critical Perspectives on International Business” Prize 2013, 2017 Emerald Highly Recommended Award, and conference track best papers from Academy of International Business Southeast Asia and the British Academy of Management. He also serves as a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Strategy and International Business at Coal City University, Nigeria, and an Adjunct Professor of Management at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana.
