PhD candidate in History, La Trobe University

Judy Hughes is a PhD candidate at La Trobe University and is currently researching the 1980 Australian national journalists strike and related issues of journalist identity and activism.

A journalist and communications professional by background, Judy specialises in oral history, modern Australian labour history, media history, journalism practice and industrial relations.

She was the first media adviser to be appointed to the national industrial tribunal (then the Australian Industrial Relations Commission which is now the Fair Work Commission) in 1999.

She completed a Master of Arts by Research and Coursework at Monash University in 2017 producing a thesis 'Coping with change in print journalism: An analysis of the lived experience of Melbourne journalists 1975-2015'.
