Professor of Environmental Sciences and Director, Environmental Resilience Institute, University of Virginia

I'm a coastal ecologist focusing on interactions between people and the environment, specifically impacts of climate change, eutrophication and species invasions. My research focuses on (1) drivers of ecological change and "tipping points" where ecosystems shift from one state to another; (2) restoration as a way to reverse undesirable changes and restore ecosystem services; and (3) forecasting climate impacts on coastal systems, particularly seagrass, and the effects of marine heat waves. I lead the Virginia Coast Reserve Long Term Ecological Research program and am Director of the University of Virginia's Environmental Resilience Institute.
