My doctoral research investigated the teaching of critical reading in university preparation courses for international students in Australia. It identified the crucial importance of engagement: if students are not engaged in making meaning from the texts they are reading, they remain marginalised from the discourse community they aspire to belong to.

I currently lecture in Language Teaching Methodology at the University of Canberra, after a long career in English Language Teaching which afforded me the opportunity of working across four continents, including three years in Indonesia.
