Professor of Political Science, Hartwick College

Laurel Elder is Professor of Political Science at Hartwick College. She teaches courses in American politics focusing on public opinion, voting, and elections with specific attention to issues of gender, race, and ethnicity. Her most recent book, The Partisan Gap: Why Democratic Women Get Elected and Republican Women Don't, won the 2022 American Political Science Association Best Book on Women and Politics Award. She is also the co-author of two other books, American Presidential Candidate Spouses: The Public’s Perspective (2018) and The Politics of Parenthood: Causes and Consequences of the Politicization and Polarization of the American Family (2012).
