Lawrence Goodridge

Dr. Goodridge has developed a successful, extramurally funded research program within the Canadian Research Institute for Food Safety and the Department of Food Science, with the primary research objective of developing approaches to improve risk assessments of foodborne bacterial and viral pathogens. This objective is being achieved by combining phenotypic and genotypic (phenogenomics) methods to develop predictive models of virulence in foodborne pathogens. Specific research studies in support of the main objective include identifying mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, including the role that mobile genetic elements play in the spread of genetic determinants of antibiotic resistance and virulence amongst bacteria.

Other research interests include identifying new antimicrobial compounds to control the growth of pathogenic bacteria, and the development genomic approaches for rapid detection of foodborne and waterborne bacterial and viral pathogens. Dr. Goodridge has published over 120 peer reviewed publications and book chapters, and has more than 300 invited presentations and abstracts and presentations at scientific meetings. Dr. Goodridge has 2 patents, and has obtained more than $50 M in research funding as PI and CoPI since 2003 from Canadian, US sources and other international sources.

Dr. Goodridge’s professional service includes serving on the Editorial Boards of two Journals including Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems. He previously served as an Editor of the Journal Bacteriophage, and on the Editorial Board of Applied and Environmental Microbiology, and the Journal of Food Protection. Dr. Goodridge is an Ad Hoc reviewer for several journals. He currently serves on the International Standards Organization Technical Committee on Method Validation (international committee), the AsiaPacific Economic Cooperation, Food Safety Cooperation Forum Partnership Training Institute Network (international committee), and the Health Canada Food Expert Advisory Committee.

Dr. Goodridge is also a member of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) Bacterial and Archaeal Viruses Subcommittee. He served as the Academic co-chair of the Food Safety Technical Working Group of the Global Food Safety Partnership (international committee). Dr Goodridge served on several USA committees including The National Academies: National Research Council Committee on the Use of Public Health Data in FSIS Food Safety Programs, the Peer Review Committee of the United States Food and Drug Administration/Center Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Microbial Risk Assessment for Salmonella spp. in Almonds, and The National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods. Dr. Goodridge also previously served as the Vice Chair and Chair of the Membership Committee of the International Association for Food Protection.
