Professor of Philosophy and Religion, Northeastern University

I am an expert in religious ethics, a professor of philosophy and religion at Northeastern University, and a prizewinning author. My writing, teaching, and public lectures cover a wide range of topics--from the role of religion is popular wellness practices to the politics of religious clothing--but generally focus on how a deeper understanding religious difference can change our sense of what is right and good. As a comparative ethicist, my research interests have taken me to India, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Spain, and Turkey.

I have written for The Atlantic, Teen Vogue, The Los Angeles Times, and Religion News Service, among others, and my work has been discussed in the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, and Instyle Magazine. I have written four books: Creative Conformity: The Feminist Politics of U.S. Catholic and Iranian Shi‘i Women (Georgetown 2011), The Islamic Veil: A Beginner's Guide (Oneworld 2012), Pious Fashion: How Muslim Women Dress (Harvard 2017), and Stealing My Religion: Not Just Any Cultural Appropriation (Harvard 2022). I am also the Director of Sacred Writes, a grant-funded project that provides media training for religion scholars.
