Dr Louis Celliers is employed by the CSIR in a dual role as a Principal Researcher in and Research Group Leader of the Coastal Systems group of the CSIR Natural Resources and the Environment business unit. The Coastal Systems research group is located on the Durban and Stellenbosch campuses of the CSIR. The group is one of the largest permanent and cohesive research units of this nature in South Africa and the African Continent.

As Principal Scientist he applies for and manage research projects in the field of Integrated Coastal Management, Coastal Governance, Institutional Assessment, Socio-Ecology. He is particularly interested in the manner in which science and scientific information can be used to improve the state of the coastal and marine environment in order to provide benefit to society.
