Lecturer in French, University of Bristol

Lucy Rayfield is a Lecturer in French at the University of Bristol and a Research Associate in Renaissance French at the University of Oxford. She has published articles and chapters on historical humour theory, sixteenth-century poetic treatises, and comic theatre in France and Italy during the Wars of Religion. Her first book, 'Poetics, Performance, and Politics in French and Italian Renaissance Comedy', is forthcoming with Legenda in 2021. This book takes a new look at how laughter and comedy were used as political propaganda in the Renaissance, especially during periods of intense strife.
