Lucy Shuttleworth

Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing, University of Portsmouth

I have a wealth of experience as a screenwriter, senior lecturer, producer and script editor. I have co-written two produced films, The Secret of Moonacre (2009) and 9th Cloud (2018) and I have adapted four novels for the screen and I have several projects for film and TV under option. During my career, I have worked with an array of talent; including Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Kathy Bates, Jeremy Irons, Penelope Cruz, Juliette Stevenson and Emilia Clarke. My filmography includes The Merchant of Venice directed by Michael Radford and Head in The Clouds starring Charlize Theron.

I regularly lecture on adaptation and screenwriting at the University of Brighton and at Liverpool University John Moores. As a writer and a producer, I optioned and adapted the novel, The Earthquake Bird and attached the director Tom Harper (War and Peace). As a writer, lecturer and development executive, developing both TV and film projects and working with both undergraduates and postgraduates, I have a unique insight into the creative process.

In 2015 I went on a University of Portsmouth funded research trip to Los Angeles and New York, interviewing executives, writers and directors’ probing the gender imbalance question, the results of which are the basis of a documentary film Through Her Eyes.

Most recently I have acted as an Executive Producer on the Arts Council funded experimental film Ultra, a multi-disciplinary project exploring colour and its relationship to emotion and the way it can impact on dementia sufferers.

I have a TV show in development with Ruby Rock Pictures and an original film in development with Evil Dog House Studios in Norway.

Funded by University of Portsmouth, I have just returned from attending The Global Campus in Human Rights and Advocacy summer school as part of the Venice Film Festival.

I am Head of Admissions for the undergraduate Creative Writing and module coordinator for Finding Form, Creative Writing for Film and for the MA unit the Short Screenwriting project.

I am a member of the Writers Guild and The Critics Circle.
