Maria is an Associate Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in London, working on the system of indenture in Guyana and its representation in literature. Maria is part of the editorial team of the new Journal for the Study of Indentureship and she is the co-editor of the anthologies We Mark Your Memory: Writing from the Descendants of Indenture (University of London Press) and The Other Windrush: Legacies of Indenture in Britain's Caribbean Empire (Pluto Press). Maria's life writing has been published in Wasafiri and The Funambulist.
