Maria Val Martin

Maria Val Martin is an atmospheric scientist working in understanding how human activities and natural processes change the atmosphere and the climate. In her work, she integrates field data and satellite observations with different types of numerical models (e.g., atmospheric chemical transport, land, and earth system models) to address questions related to air pollution, atmosphere-biosphere-climate interactions and climate change mitigation.

Maria is also a passionate advocate of science and shares her enthusiasm for atmospheric sciences working with local schools and the community. She runs an Air Quality Garden in Sheffield every summer and organizes outreach events to raise public awareness on the importance of urban air quality.

Maria received her MEng in Agriculture Engineering from Universidad Politecnica de Valencia (Spain), and completed her PhD in Environmental Engineering at Michigan Technological University (USA). In 2007, she was a postdoctoral associate at Harvard University, and later worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. In 2011, she joined the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University as a Research Scientist. She moved to the UK with her family in 2014 and is currently a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow at the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences of University of Sheffield.
