Mary Hanlon has a PhD in sociology from the University of Edinburgh, where she researched fashion-related work and activism in the wake of the Rana Plaza building collapse in Bangladesh. She has published in the journal Fashion Theory and has presented research at academic and industry conferences and workshops in North America and Europe. She has a background in textiles and international development studies, and is the co-founder of Social Alterations (www.SocialAlterations.com), an online education lab for responsible fashion.
