Dr Matthew Hall is a Senior Researcher at the Environmental Law Initiative (ELI) and a Visiting Scholar in the Faculty of Law, Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

ELI is a New Zealand charitable trust that seeks better outcomes for the Aotearoa New Zealand environment through the application and development of environmental laws.

Matt's work spans the ELI focus areas of oceans and coasts, freshwater and biodiversity/species protection.

Matt is also a scholar of environmental philosophy. His research examines the relationships between human beings and plants.

Matt's new book, 'The Imagination of Plants: A Book of Botanical Mythology' (SUNY Press, 2019) examines the stories told about plants in the world's mythological traditions.

His first book, 'Plants as Persons: a Philosophical Botany' (SUNY Press, 2011) examines the backgrounding of plants as passive and inert and argues for their inclusion within human moral consideration.
