Maura Sellars

Maura Sellars taught all primary classes and combinations of grades. Her experience spans over 28 years in school settings. At this University she has taught in the Primary mathematics courses for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. She is currently working with a number of research higher degree students in areas of pedagogy, leadership, cognition and developing mathematics capacities through working in the medium of visual arts. Her writing reflects her major interests. She has completed a substantial contribution to a book on numeracy across the curriculum, which she also edited and has published the second edition of her book "Reflective Practice for Teachers in addition to the recent release of her book "Educating Students with Refugee and Asylum Seeker Experiences: A commitment to Humanity. She is currently working in research projects which are examining the development of safe school places of belonging for students with refugee backgrounds and experiences and another with colleagues which is investigating the experiences and strategies that school leaders have found are supportive of this group of vulnerable students. in addition to these projects she is investigating the potential of an intervention program in primary school mathematics which utilizes student centered pedagogies, inductive reasoning strategies and differentiated planning for learning to support the learning off all students. the program is aimed at improving student positive dispositions and improving learning outcomes by engaging students with learning experiences which promote mathematical thinking and reasoning, engagement with mathematical language and evaluation of problem solving strategies.
