What options does “geopolitical” Europe have in the rapidly shifting currents of global politics? In the absence of a significant overhaul of its foreign and security policy approach, it would appear that Brussels has very few. First and foremost, Europe’s strategic vision suffers from a misalignment of focus. While it is crucial to consider various worst-case scenarios with Beijing and Washington, the problems in Europe’s own backyard should have top-priority.
