Michael Li

Michael supports and coordinates research, modelling and analysis capabilities at Climateworks, in line with the organisation’s strategic objective of achieving systems-level change. This involves working closely with program delivery teams, and providing independent and objective advice on design and presentation. Michael also supports the capacity management and professional development of analysts working across Climateworks, and hosts forums for sharing best practices.

Previously, Michael managed the research and engagement activities of the Built to Perform report in close collaboration with industry and government, developed to strengthen minimum energy standards for new buildings. This led to a once-in-a-decade reform of building energy regulations, and to Michael being recognised as Young Energy Efficiency Professional of the Year at the 2018 National Energy Efficiency Awards. Michael also led Reshaping Infrastructure, which transformed previously fixed mindsets around the influence of physical infrastructure on greenhouse gas emissions and is catalysing policy reforms by governments across Australia.

Before joining Climateworks, Michael worked as a sustainability consultant at global integrated services firm AECOM.

Michael holds Bachelor’s degrees in engineering and science from the University of Melbourne and a Master’s degree in Sustainable Development from the University of Cambridge. In 2014 Michael was recognised by collaborative sustainability community 2degrees as one of the global ‘Top 25 Under 25s’ transforming the world of sustainable business.
