Michael Toomey is a Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Glasgow. He holds a Ph.D. in Global Affairs from Rutgers University (2015). Prior to coming to Glasgow, Michael held teaching posts at Aberystwyth University, University of Reading, University of Limerick, and Wenzhou-Kean University. He currently teaches classes on Defending Democracy in the EU, Human Rights in Global Politics, and International Relations.

Michael's research primarily focuses on the impact of EU enlargement on adherence to liberal democratic norms in Central Europe, and on the use of narratives surrounding 'cultural trauma' to build populist grand narratives. He has previously provided material for outlets such as RTE Brainstorm, Infobae.com, and the Sunday Post.
