Director, Integrated Marine Observing System, and Adjunct Professor, University of Tasmania

Dr Michelle Heupel is Director of Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing system (IMOS) capability within the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy program. She is a research scientist with over 25 years’ experience working on ecology, conservation and management of marine predators, predominantly sharks and fish. Her career has spanned a range of sectors in marine science and included research projects ranging from rivers to coral reefs. Michelle has produced over 190 peer reviewed scientific publications, has held various editorial positions with several scientific journals and has previously or currently sits on several national and international committees relevant to science, conservation and management.

As Director of IMOS Michelle drives coordination and delivery of sustained observations of Australia’s marine environments to support research, sustainable use, management and industry activities. This role intersects with other programs and infrastructure as we work to deliver the best possible outcomes for Australia’s vast and valuable marine estate.
