Reader in Democratic Mental Health, University of Central Lancashire

Mick is Reader in Democratic Mental Health in the School of Nursing. He has consistently supported public engagement initiatives and helped found the Comensus service user and carer involvement initiative at the university. This has involved a significant amount of inter-disciplinary scholarship and alliance building, community engagement, and support for user groups. Comensus connects research and teaching and provides for user involvement at all stages of the research process, helping to define research questions and enhance teaching quality. There is a valuable international dimension connected to scholars and activists working in the new filed of Mad Studies. Other current and recent activity includes PPI lead for the mental health theme of North West Coastal CLAHRC, our ‘One-In-Four’ Film Festival held annually, participatory action research and appreciative inquiry projects in mental health settings, research into service user and carer involvement in secure mental health services, and studies of restrictive practices and these can be minimised.
