Research Fellow, Charles Darwin University

Mirjam completed her PhD in molecular microbiology at the University of Basel in Switzerland. She works as a research fellow at RIEL managing an ARC-Linkage project on the influence of treated sewage effluent upon the microbial community in Darwin harbour using novel impact assessment methods including N-cycle functional markers.

Her main research interests are the impacts of anthropogenic environmental changes on the microbial community in the Darwin environment including human pathogens such as the melioidosis agent Burkholderia pseudomallei.

She also works as a senior research officer at Menzies School of Health Research, Charles Darwin University, analysing the ecological niche of B. pseudomallei in the anthropogenic environment of Darwin.

Her ongoing postgraduate studies in biostatistics with University of Sydney and the Biostatistical Collaboration of Australia assist in the analysis of multivariate data to study the ecology and epidemiology of these microbes.
