I am currently undertaking my PhD through South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) Aquatic Sciences and The University of Adelaide. My project is focusing on using animal-borne cameras, GPS/dive loggers and accelerometer/magnetometers to look at the foraging behaviours of Australian sea lions and key habitat and prey preferences.
Australian sea lions are currently listed as endangered by the IUCN and under Australian legislation. The use of video from underwater cameras attached to Australian sea lions provides fundamental information about habitats, prey species and foraging behaviours that are critical to the species. The information collected throughout my project is enhancing our understanding of what habitats, resources and areas are important for sea lions and will be crucial for informing effective management of both state and commonwealth marine reserves, in supporting Australian sea lion populations.
