Emeritus Professor of Psychology, University of the West of England

In collaboration with James Partridge (Founder of the charity Changing Faces), I established The Centre for Appearance Research (CAR) at the University of the West of England, Bristol, in 1990. Since then, CAR has become a world leading centre in appearance research. I worked as a British Psychological Society's Consultant with the UK Government's Department of Health from 2004-2010. I have led several EU funded collaborations since 2012, including the high profile COST Action Appearance Matters - a network of 160 researchers and practitioners from 35 European countries. I am an honorary life member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), the Craniofacial Society of Great Britain & Ireland (CSFGBI) , The British Burns Society and the South African Burns Society. I was appointed OBE in 2016 for services to people with disfigurement. I retired from my full time post at UWE in December 2017, but continue to contribute to European projects, international collaborations and externally funded UWE workstreams.
