Lecturer in Global Urbanism and Urban Development, Global Development Institute, University of Manchester

My research has explored experiences of urban poverty in Tanzania and Bangladesh, looking particularly through the lens of work and employment. I am also interested in the ways in which development actors conceptualise and seek to tackle poverty, having worked as Head of BRAC Uganda's Research and Evaluation Unit from 2011-2012. My recent research has explored the roles and limits to NGOs as transformative development actors. In collaboration with Dan Brockington at the University of Sheffield, we have recently completed the first stage of a project mapping the UK's development NGO sector.
