I am a Professor of History at Boston University where, for the past 30 years, my research and writing has focused on the US Civil War, emphasizing issues related to gender and women and the various ways the war has been remembered (often mis-remembered) up to the present time. I have published a number of books as well as various articles and book chapters on these topics, with some of my work also appearing in The Washington Post; Cognoscenti; the New York Times; the Chronicle of Higher Education; the Boston Herald and the History News Network. I have also been quoted in articles in The New York Times; Time; Newsweek; the Los Angeles Times; Filter Nyheter (Norway); Asahi Shimbun (Japan); and Politiken (Denmark). To support this work, I have received fellowships from the Charles Warren Center at Harvard University; the Fulbright foundation; the National Endowment for the Humanities; and the Smithsonian Institution.
My current research focuses on my family and their connection to the mid-twentieth century "folk revival" in the US.
