John C. Jeffries Jr. Distinguished Professor of Law and David H. Ibbeken '71 Research Professor of Law, University of Virginia

I’ve taught law at the University of Virginia since 1979, focusing on issues of foreign relations, national security, international law, international business, taxation, and all things Russian. I also worked as a lawyer and adviser for the Departments of Treasury in the Clinton administration, State in the George W. Bush administration, and Defense in the Trump and Biden administrations. Before becoming a lawyer I got a graduate degree in Soviet Studies and worked briefly as an analyst doing Soviet politics at the Central Intelligence Agency. I have worked as a litigator or expert witness in many legal proceedings, U.S., foreign, and international, involving Russians and the Russian Federation.
