I've taught English and Linguistics at Lancaster University since 2002. I did my PhD on Polari, a secret language used by gay men. Since then I've written over 20 books focussing on topics like language, health, sexuality, gender, religion, society, identity and representation. My most recent books include: The Language of Patient Feedback (2019), Fabulosa! The Story of Polari (2019), American and British English (2017), Discourse Analysis and Media Attitudes: The Representation of Islam in the British Press (2013), Obesity in the News (2021), and Outrageous! The Story of Section 28 and Britain's Battle for LGBT Education (2022).
