Peter was educated at the University of Otago, the University of New England and Simon Fraser University. He has been a visiting Scholar at the University of Otago, The University of British Columbia, Rutgers University and The University of Oxford.

Peter’s research is focused on the links between economic growth and international trade. He has published widely in this field including human capital accumulation, trade and environmental issues, long run growth through history, immigration, the growth of China, East Asia and India, and military spending.

Peter has also served as an expert consultant to the Productivity Commission and to the Department of Innovation, industry, Science and Research and on the ARC College of Experts.
