Professor Gabrielle Cooper OAM

Professor of Pharmacy, University of Canberra

Extensive experience in clinical pharmacy in acute and community care within and Australia and in the UK as well as directorships of public and private hospital pharmacy departments. Established Pharmacy Course at the University of Canberra in 2003. Actively involved in health teaching across many health disciplines including nursing, clinical psychology, medicine and pharmacy. Research focus in Dementia, Clinical Toxicology and an Innovative Clinical Education Models. Active member of the pharmacy profession (PSA Board Member and SHPA Member) and member of the ACT Medicare Local and ACT Clinical Senate.
Interests: Pharmacy, Charcoal, Pain, Overdose, Antibiotic. Drug Testing, Chlamydia, Dementia, Transitions of Care, Medicines Supply, Healthcare Team, Inter-professional, Drug Related Hospital Admissions,, Public Funding of Hospital Medicines, Primary Health Networks.

Curriculum Vitae

Professor Gabrielle Cooper graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy from the University of Tasmania in 1983. Following her Intern year at the Kevin Corby Pharmacy and Calvary Hospital in Hobart, Gabrielle moved to the ACT where she took up a position as a Clinical Pharmacist at the Royal Canberra Hospital with rotations to the Medical and Surgical wards, ICU and Pediatrics. In 1987 Gabrielle attained a Graduate Diploma in Hospital Pharmacy in the Discipline of Pharmacy Sydney University with rotations at Concord, St Vincent’s and Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals. Gabrielle then accepted a position at St Vincent’s Hospital as a Clinical Pharmacist and participated in a research project in Academic Detailing to improve medicines use in Primary Care with Professor Rick Day.

In 1990 Gabrielle moved to the UK to work at Great Ormond St Hospital London to work in peadiatrics. On returning to Australia in 1992 she accepted an academic role at the University of Tasmania in Clinical Pharmacy Practice. Then she moved to the ACT to take on the role of Chief Pharmacist at Calvary Hospital.

In 2003 Gabrielle Established the Discipline of Pharmacy at the University of Canberra.
Professor Cooper and colleagues have enabled $765,539.00 income to the university through research grants.

Gabrielle is the currently Chair of the ACT Primary Health Network.
