Richard's principal research interests focus on the inter-relationships between sport, the media and popular culture. He has recently published work on the history of sports broadcasting in Britain, the history of sports commentary in radio and television, the impact of social media on sports journalism, the history of sport on film, Olympic broadcasting, the strategic management of sports communications, sports image rights, sports journalism and the globalisation of televised sport.

His research also connects with issues concerning cultural policy, broadcasting policy, intellectual property rights in sport, music and the entertainment industries more broadly, cultural memory and cultural heritage, the regulation of social media, and the cultural politics of identity. He is an associate member of the new Centre for Gender & Feminist Studies and would welcome applications from research students interested in investigating issues around gender, sport and the media
