Marine Institute Research Fellow, Marine Institute, University of Plymouth

Prior to becoming a Marine Institute Research Fellow at Plymouth University I was a Royal Society Research Fellow (2003-2011). My training is in molecular biology and my research interests focus on the marine plankton and their ecology, especially with regard to the marine food web.

i) I support science outreach and communication and I have launched science outreach tools under the 'Ocean Drifters' and 'Secchi App' project names. Over 12,000 people of all ages have now visited 'Ocean Drifters' shows at science festivals and fairs, and every secondary school science department in England has an Ocean Drifters DVD. More information about 'Ocean Drifters' can be found at www.oceandrifters.org

ii) The 'Sechhi App' and the associated Secchi Disk study was launched in February 2013 and it represents the first global marine citizen science project inviting seafarers to collect data from the sea. The project has captured imaginations and has received worldwide media interest and enthusiastic support from the sailing community.
