Emeritus Professor, Asia Research Centre, Murdoch University

I have held positions of Professor at Murdoch University (1991 - 2002) and The Institute for Social Studies, The Hague (Erasmus University) (2003 - 2007). I was Director of the Australian Research Council's Special Centre for research on political and social change in Asia from 1994 to 2000. I have held awards from the Fulbright Foundation and the Leverhulme Trust and am a Fellow of the Academy of Social Science. I have been a member of the Foreign Affairs Advisory Board, The Advisory Council of the Australia Indonesia Institute and the Ausaid Advisory Board. I am the author of numerous books and journal articles on political economy, Indonesia, neoliberalism and development. An early book, Indonesia: the Rise of Capital (1986) remains the most cited and best selling book on the politics of Indonesia. More recent books include, Reorganising Power in Indonesia (2004), jointly authored with Vedi Hadiz. Recent articles include pieces on the political economy of Islamic politics (New Political Economy) and the political economy of oligarchy (Indonesia-Cornell).
