Ronald Labonte

Dr. Labonté is Distinguished Research Chair in Globalization and Health Equity at the School of Epidemiology and Public Health, Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa. His current research interests include globalization as a ‘determinant of determinants’ (he chaired the Globalization Knowledge Network for the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health; see www.globalhealthequity.ca); the political economy of trade, tobacco farming, and tobacco control in low and middle income countries; ethics, human rights and global health development; global migration of health workers; revitalization of comprehensive primary health care; global health diplomacy; and globalization and the health of Canadians. Most recently he is co-lead of the CIHR-funded Global One Health Network on Global Governance of Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Resistance. He has over 330 scientific publications and several hundred articles in popular media. His recent books include Health Equity in a Globalizing Era (Oxford University Press, 2019), Revitalizing Health for All: Case Studies in the Struggle for Comprehensive Primary Health Care (University of Toronto Press, 2017); Population Health in Canada (Canadian Scholars Press, 2017););Globalization and Health: Pathways, Evidence and Policy (Routledge, 2009); Health Promotion: From Community Empowerment to Global Justice (Palgrave Macmillan. 2008); Critical Public Health: A Reader (Routledge. 2007); Fatal Indifference: The G8, Africa and Global Health (University of Cape Town Press/IDRC Books, 2004). Professor Labonté has also been active public health associations provincially, nationally and internationally. Prior to his research on globalization and health, he worked as a health promotion consultant and wrote and consulted extensively on community development, empowerment, policy advocacy and other facets of community health.
