Lecturer in Contemporary History, Birkbeck, University of London

Rui Lopes holds a PhD in International History from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He is currently a Lecturer in Contemporary European History at Birkbeck, University of London, and a researcher at the Institute of Contemporary History, NOVA-FCSH. He has previously taught at LSE and at Goldsmiths, University of London. From 2016 to 2019, he was PI for the research project "Amilcar Cabral: from Political History to the Politics of Memory". He is the author of the book “West Germany and the Portuguese Dictatorship, 1968–1974: Between Cold War and Colonialism” (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014) and of various academic articles about Cold War culture, transnational anti-colonialism, and the international dimension of the Portuguese dictatorship and empire. He is a member of the editorial boards of the journals Aniki: Portuguese Journal of the Moving Image and Práticas da História: Journal on Theory, Historiography and Uses of the Past.
