Samantha Jane King

Professor, Kinesiology and Health Studies, Queen's University, Ontario

Samantha King is professor of Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen’s University where she is cross-appointed to Gender Studies, Sociology, and Cultural Studies. An interdisciplinary researcher and teacher, her work explores the embodied dimensions of consumer capitalism with a focus on race and sex. She is the author of Pink Ribbons, Inc: Breast Cancer and the Politics of Philanthropy (University of Minnesota Press, 2006), the subject of a documentary film by the same name. More recently, she co-edited Messy Eating: Conversations on Animals as Food (Fordham University Press, 2019). Her work has appeared in Social Text, Ethnic and Racial Studies, International Political Sociology, Health Communication, and the International Journal of Drug Policyamong other venues. She has written for broader audiences in the Chronicle of Philanthropy, the National Post, and the Toronto Star. Her current research includes projects on the economies and ecologies of “protein cultures” with Gavin Weedon, and on pain and painkilling in professional sport with Matt Ventresca.
