Sathiya Susuman Appunni

Professor of Demography, University of the Western Cape

I have completed MA (1991-1993) and M Phil (1994-1995) in Population Studies from Bharathiar University. After that, I completed my Ph.D. in Demography (1996-2000) from the University of Kerala, India, and I worked as a Research Officer at IIPS, Mumbai (2001-2005). After that, I moved to Ethiopia and worked as an Assistant Professor at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia (2006-2008).

Since August 2008, I have been working at UWC. I worked on several research projects in India, Ethiopia, and South Africa. My core research efforts mainly focus on fertility, mortality, and migration. In addition, I have twenty years of teaching and research experience in demography and population studies.

I have published over 100 DHET journal articles with a high impact of 3.28 Plos One and a low impact of 1.02 Journal of Asian and African Studies. Google scholar citations 878, h-index 15, i10 index 21, and the NRF C2 rated researcher. I have collaborative research with national and international institutions. I have attended and presented at more than forty national and international conferences. 10 Ph.D. and 40 Master's students completed their theses under my supervision. In addition, 5 Ph.D. and five Master's students are working under my guidance.
