PhD Candidate in English Literature, University of Reading

After working as a secondary school English teacher since 1998, I am studying for a PhD at the Universities of Exeter and Reading, funded by the South, West & Wales Doctoral Training Partnership.

My thesis explores the relationship between literary censorship and the Victorian novel. I am particularly interested in the role played by the circulating libraries and how their informal brand of censorship influenced and shaped the aesthetic of the time. Paradoxically, I explore how censorship was far from a pejorative force in the nineteenth century but actually helped produce the literature we  know and love today!

My research has been published in the Hardy Society Journal and The Thomas Hardy Journal.
