I am finishing my PhD with the Policing Institute for the Eastern Region (PIER) at Anglia Ruskin University, which explored mothers' experiences of abuse by their now adult children. This research was driven by my 12 years working in the field of domestic abuse / violence against women and girls in London, which had highlighted gaps in both practice and research in relation to adult family violence, and violence and abuse perpetrated by adult children in particular. Filial abuse remains a very under-researched, hidden issue.
Since I started my PhD research in September 2018, I have delivered trainings to frontline practitioners on the topic of adult family violence and contributed to work conducted by my organisation, Standing Together Against Domestic Abuse, on domestic homicide reviews, analysing cases involving family members and parents killed by their children in particular.
