Thomas Purcell

Thomas' research is situated between International Political Economy and Human Geography with empirical interest in Latin America and Spain. He is a specialist on Venezuela’s and Ecuador´s ‘post-neoliberal’ development projects and have written in depth about the development of capitalism and the urbanisation process in Spain.

His Latin American focused research seeks to investigate the limits and contradictions of contemporary state-led development initiatives focusing analytically on the use of natural resource rents within alternative economic development models and initiatives. His ongoing collaborative research on Spain is analysing the fall-out from the financial crisis and how austerity is quickly becoming the ‘new normal’.

Thomas is co-author of The Limits to Capital in Spain (2014), and has published several book chapters and articles in journals such as Geoforum, Historical Materialism, the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, Latin American Perspectives, and Science & Society.
