Tim Nelson

Authored nearly 50 journal articles in journals such as Economic Papers, Energy Economics, Energy Policy, Economic Analysis and Policy, Australian Journal of Agricultural and Research Economics.

Areas of expertise are electricity markets; climate change and energy markets.

Tim was recently appointed the Executive General Manager, Energy Markets at Infigen Energy. In this role, Tim oversees the optimisation of Infigen’s portfolio of energy production, energy pricing, risk management and various channels to market. These include derivatives trading, commercial and industrial (C&I) customer sales and spot sales into the National Electricity Market (NEM). Tim also oversees Infigen’s regulatory and policy positioning and new firming and storage business development. Tim joined Infigen in March 2020 from the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC). Up until November 2018, Tim was the Chief Economist of AGL Energy and led the company's public policy advocacy and its sustainability and ESG strategy. In particular, he led development of AGL's revised Greenhouse Gas Policy, climate risk disclosure and the Powering Australian Renewables Fund (PARF) concept.

Tim is also a member of the Westpac Stakeholder Advisory Council and on the Research Committee at the Centre for Policy Development. He has previously been a director of Sustainable Business Australia and served on the Grattan Institute Energy Reference Group as well as stakeholder expert groups for the Finkel Review and various energy white paper processes.

Tim is an Associate Professor at Griffith University and is widely published in Australian and international peer-reviewed journals. He has presented at conferences in Australia and throughout Asia and Europe. He holds a PhD in economics for which he earned a Chancellors Doctoral Research Medal and a first class honours degree in economics. Tim is also a fellow of the Governance Institute (FGIA and FCIS) and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD).
