Lecturer in Theatre, University of York

After a first degree in English at Cambridge University, I trained as an actor at LAMDA and later as a director at The Gate Theatre in London under Erica Whyman and at The National Theatre Studio with Katie Mitchell. I have worked as a freelance director, and as a teacher of acting and directing at institutions including Shakespeare’s Globe, The Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis, The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the Fachhochschule, Osnabrück, Rose Bruford College and LAMDA.

As well as lecturing in theatre in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television at the University of York, I am a co-director of the Common Ground Theatre Ensemble. We are based in and around York and collaborate to produce new and reimagined plays. We aim to create theatre which establishes common ground with our audiences, engaging us all in exciting, challenging, resonant stories in the places where we live and work.
