Tom Smith

(He/him/his)
Professor of Microbiology, Sheffield Hallam University

Tom Smith has led a research group at Sheffield Hallam University since 2001. His interests span applications in molecular microbiology - exploiting the good and controlling the bad of microbial biodiversity. Particular interests are:

• Antimicrobials and antimicrobial-releasing materials for medical devices and other applications – to prevent device-related infections and minimise the impact of the antibiotic-resistance crisis
• Control of corrosion and biofouling – to protect buildings, engineering structures and human life in the environment
• Applied enzymology and physiology of methanotrophic (methane-oxidising) bacteria for mitigation of global warming, bioremediation and environmentally compatible manufacture of chemicals
