Veronicah Mbaire Chuchu

PhD Candidate, Department of Medical Microbiology, University of Nairobi

Veronicah Mbaire Chuchu is a research scientist pursuing her PhD at the University of Nairobi on Tropical and Infectious Diseases, with a fellowship at the Washington State University. She holds a master’s degree in Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics and a bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Nairobi. Chuchu has previously worked as a surveillance specialist with USAID Infectious Disease Detection and Surveillance project supporting the national government in strengthening the surveillance of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) infections in health facilities. Chuchu has also worked at Kenya Medical Research Institute, coordinating rabies surveillance and vaccinations of dogs to eliminate dog mediated human rabies.
In her current PhD work, she is looking at the burden of AMR in pediatric patients admitted with infections resistant to antibiotics using treatment cost and duration of hospitalization as the metrics of measuring disease burden. In this study, she will also be looking at the impact of diagnostics as a control intervention for AMR. Information collected from this study will inform the government on the impact of antimicrobial resistance besides the common health outcomes and inform development of public health policies for control and prevention of antimicrobial resistance. Chuchu has great interest in One Health, epidemiology, health economics, and emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases and hopes to contribute greatly to their prevention and control.
