Lecturer in Economics, University of Sussex

Vikram Pathania is a lecturer in economics at the University of Sussex. He earned a PhD in economics from University of California - Berkeley, and prior to joining Sussex, he was a research fellow at the London School of Economics where he taught masters and undergraduate courses in microeconomics and strategy. He also has a B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU)-Varanasi, and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management -Ahmedabad.

He has diverse work experience spanning stints in UN agencies, investment banking, and consulting. He has worked in health and development policy-oriented research at the World Health Organization in Geneva, and at the World Bank/IFC in Washington DC. He has also worked as a fixed income derivatives trader for UBS in London, and in economic consulting for Cornerstone Research in San Francisco.

Whilst at the WHO, he published in leading medical and public health journals such as JAMA and Lancet. He now publishes regularly in top economics journals e.g. the American Economic Journals. He has close to 4000 Google Scholar citations. His work has received coverage in several media outlets including the BBC, NY Times, LA Times, Bloomberg and many others.

His current research interest is applied microeconomics with a focus on empirical analyses in health, development, and public policy. Within these domains, his research is oriented towards testing micro-economic theory, credibly identifying causal links of policy relevance, and evaluating the effect of interventions. Specific examples include measuring the causal effect of proximity to fast food outlets on obesity among school children, the causal link between cellphone usage while driving and crash risk, and the impact of malaria control on infant mortality.
