Professor of Waste Management, The University of Queensland

I am originally a Civil Engineer (University of Sth Aust, 1980). I worked in water supply operations until 1984, then did a Masters in Environmental Engineering (University of Notre Dame, USA 1986) and a PhD (UQ, 1992). I then worked in environmental consulting with Woodward Clyde (1992-94) before joining UQ as a lecturer in 1994. I have since worked on biodegradation processes for solid waste in landfills and in purpose built reactors. I have 62 journal publications and 8 ARC grants in this field. I am the incoming President (2023-24) for the Int. Waste Working Group, the body that publishes the leading journal in this field, Waste Management. I was an Assoc Editor for this journal from 2008-2013. I have strong interactions with industry, that lead to the establishment of the Chair in Waste Management at UQ from 2011. The Chair was originally funded by Thiess Services, and Remondis when they took over Thiess Services' waste management business. I have been principal supervisor for 14 graduated PhD students.
