I specialize in sociolinguistics, phonetics, language processing, and language contact. At the intersection of these interests, I ask research questions about how communication is mediated by social patterns, power dynamics, and attitudes and ideologies — and how these, in turn, are reflected and can be reinforced in the language we use. And I consult and advise toward aims of communicating more effectively and inclusively by being aware of the variation in language and biases that surround it.
