The ‘full’ hormone can be taken orally

A hormone that helps people feel full after eating can be delivered into the bloodstream orally, according to new research from Syracuse University and Murdoch University.

The hormone, called human PYY, helps regulate appetite and energy. Past research has found that when taken orally the hormone was destroyed in the stomach.

This study used vitamin B12 as a vehicle to carry the PYY through the digestive system and into the bloodstream. The findings are published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.

In the future, the vitamin-hormone combination could be inserted into chewing gum or an oral tablet to assist with weight loss.
