Shedding light on biology’s ‘dark matter’

Researchers have discovered a method which might illuminate the biological phenomenon of “microbial dark matter” – a near-invisible infrastructure found in all living things.

The researchers from the Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute in the US, in conjunction with the University of Queensland, surveyed the DNA of uncultivated microbial cells.

They found several genetic patterns and were able to estimate the organisms’ “dark matter” in relation to one another.
