Supernova study to determine distances in space

Research of a supernova in our galaxy will increase the precision of which we can measure distances outside of our own galaxy.

Supernova SN 2012fr appeared following the explosion of a White Dwarf star last year.

The team is using the “standard candle” technique which calculates distance via brightness. These calculations will also contribute to the hunt for Dark Energy, the source of the accelerated expansion of the Universe.
